Everybody loves a road trip! Right?!

Oh my God. I am Going. To. Die.

That is how I feel about being in an airplane.  This is a new phobia that developed over the last 10 years, and if you are phobic about flying, you know that is is not just a case of nerves.  Every moment from takeoff to landing is torture. Pure torture. I feel like I am on the verge of death the whole entire time.

Which is the real reason that I convinced my poor husband that a scenic road trip through the States would be the greatest way ever to kick off our move to Mexico.

At first it was going to be an epic road trip from Peterborough, Ontario aaaaaalllllll the way down through the States and Mexico to the South of Mexico then back up the Yucatan Peninsula.  I was actually really looking forward to that trip, because there is a heck of a lot to see between point A and B.  A lot of people make that drive safely, however after getting advice from a few people, both Mexicans and expats, about the best route to take, we decided that with two small kids in tow it was just too risky.  Not knowing the routes, the language or the local customs could land us in hot water, and we decided to skip the drive through Mexico until we got to know the place better.

But for some reason by that point we had decided that a bit of a road trip would be fun, and the flight from Florida would only be 90 minutes instead of 4 hours.  (YAY!) We also had the opportunity to visit my wonderful cousin Mica and her family in Pensacola, a long overdue visit that we didn't want to pass up.

Spoiler alert: sitting in a car for 14 hours is not that fun.  Doing it two days in a row, even worse. But you know what? We made the best of it.  Even our first night at a Burlington hotel was fun - they had a great pool and we swam for ages.  Incidentally, if your idea of a good time is getting hammered on cheap wine and taking lots of selfies, the Burlington   Holiday Inn has a deal for you!

We stopped at a kooky 50s-themed diner in small-town Ohio, ate barbeque in Kentucky and biscuits and gravy in Tennessee, and swam in the Gulf of Mexico in Pensacola, where we saw dolphins, sea turtles, and all kinds of fish.  And we also got a lot of advice about the state of our eternal souls. From Billboards.  Thanks, Alabama!

There were definitely times when it was an ordeal, but the secret to enjoying travelling is just.....well, enjoying it!  If you make the best of everything you can find fun anywhere.  We made it through the 5-day trip and flew from Orlando, Florida on August 20th.  AND - bonus! - I did not die in a plane crash - BOOYAH! Take that, air travel!!!!

We arrived in Mexico and immediately felt like we had gone from the frying pan into the fire, but I will leave that story until next time.....
